Japanese Pro-Wrestling in 2016, A Year in Review


[9/1] NJPW – LION’S GATE was held at the Shinjuku FACE. The show featured New Japan vs. NOAH as Shibata, Tenzan, Kojima, Nagata & Nakanishi took on Shiozaki, Taniguchi, Nakajima, Kitamiya & Kiyomiya.
[9/2] Misc – TARU held his 20th anniversary at the Shinjuku FACE. TARU teamed with Suwama and Takuya Sugawara to take on Ultimo Dragon, TAKA Michinoku & KAMIKAZE.
[9/3] IGF – Masakatsu Funaki and Shinichi Suzukawa took on Shinya Aoki and Alexander Otsuka at the Tokyo Dome City Hall. This marked the first ever encounter between Funaki and MMA fighter Aoki.
[9/4] AJPW – The 4th ever “Oudou Tournament” began in Shinagawa. Suwama took on Kento Miyahara in the mian event. With Suwama emerging the victor against the Triple Crown Champion. Jun Akiyama, Zeus, and Kendo Kashin also won their first round matches.
[9/4] FREEDOMS – Takashi Sasaki held his 20th anniversary in his hometown of Ichinoseki. The main event saw Takashi Sasaki & Shuji Ishikawa taking on Jun Kasai & Violento Jack.
[9/7] BJW – The “Saikyo Tag League” began at the Shinkiba 1stRING in Tokyo. The main event saw Kankuro Hoshino & Masato Inaba taking on Takayuki Ueki & Masaya Takahashi.
[9/10] NOAH – Genba Hirayanagi held his retirement at the Korakuen Hall.
[9/10] RJPW – Masakatsu Funaki defended the Legends Championship against Shinjiro Otani.
[9/11] BJW – Kankuro Hoshino defended the Deathmatch Heavyweight belt against Masaya Takahashi.
[9/11] GUTS World – Masked Mystery defeated Mr. Gannosuke to become the new GWC Singles Champion. Keizo Matsuda & YUJI KITO defended the GWC Tag belts against KAI & Shota.
[9/16] Michinoku – The “Fukumen World League” began at the Korakuen Hall. Caristico made his return to Japan. As SUGI also made his return to in-ring competition after nearly four years away.
[9/17] NJPW – BUSHI defeated KUSHIDA to become the IWGP Junior Champion for the first time in his career. Katsuyori Shibata also defended the NEVER Openweight belt against Bobby Fish. Kyle O’Reilly called out for the challenge after the match.
[9/18] WRESTLE-1 – Daiki Inaba defended the W-1 belt against KAI in the main event of the show. Kaz Hayashi and Kotaro Suzuki defeated Shuji Kondo and “brother” YASSHI to become the new W-1 Tag Champions, for the vacant belts. Yusuke Kodama defended the Cruiser belt against Seiki Yoshioka. Manabu Soya also announced his return to competition to be on October 9, he called out for the match to be against his former mentor Takao Omori.
[9/19] AJPW – The final of the “Oudou Tournament” took place at the Korakuen Hall. Suwama emerged the victor after beating Zeus in the main event match. Naoya Nomura and Yuma Aoyagi announced their intentions to join Miyahara and Lee in NEXTREAM. Manabu Soya also appeared as he directly challenge Omori for his return match. Omori did not have an answer at that time.
[9/20] WRESTLE-1 – After a day of thinking, Omori formally accepted Soya’c challenge.
[9/22] NJPW – Kenny Omega defeated YOSHI-HASHI to retain his Tokyo Dome challenge rights. The Briscoe Brothers defended the IWGP Tag belts against Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa.
[9/22] DRAGON GATE – YAMATO defended the Open The Dream Gate belt against Akira Tozawa.
[9/23] NOAH – Takaki Sugiura defended the GHC Heavyweight belt against Masa Kitamiya. Katsuhiko Nakajima came forward to make the next challenge. Atsushi Kotoge defeated Yoshinobu Kanemaru to reclaim the GHC Junior belt from Suzuki-gun. Marufuji and Yano defended the GHC Tag belts against Yone and Storm.
[9/25] NJPW – Tetsuya Naito defeated Michael Elgin to become the new IWGP Intercontinental Champion. Satoshi Kojima, Ricochet, and David Finlay beat Adam Cole and Young Bucks to become the new NEVER 6 Tag Champions. Captain New Japan also turned on Yoshitatsu as he aligned himself with BULLET CLUB.
[9/25] AJPW – Yohei Nakajima defended the GAORA TV belt against Masao Inoue. Mitsuya Nagai and Takeshi Minamino formally announced the formation of “DARK NIGHTMARE”.
[9/25] DDT – Shuji Ishikawa defended the KO-D Openweight belt against Kazusada Higuchi at the Korakuen Hall. HARASHIMA and Yuko Miyamoto also defended the KO-D Tag belts against Daisuke Sasaki and Tetsuya Endo.
[9/25] DIAMOND STARS – Held their first ever show at the Shinkiba 1stRING in Tokyo. The main event saw Rob Conway & Matt Rivera defend the NWA World Tag belts against Rob Terry and Masakatsu Funaki.
[9/25] Misc – Kazuyuki Fujita announced his retirement from both MMA and Pro-Wrestling following a loss at the RIZIN MMA event. The former IWGP Heavyweight Champion declared that he did not want a proper retirement, but he is thankful for all the support he has received throughout his career.
[9/26] FMW – Kintaro Kanemura competed in a special W★ING reunion match. As he began the final few months before his retirement at the end of the year.
[9/29] DDT – HARASHIMA won the #1 spot of the “DDT Dramatic General Election 2016”. With the win he would once more earn a shot at the KO-D Openweight belt. He would call for the match to take place on 12/4 at the EDION Arena Osaka.
[9/29] ZERO1 – The final match of the Tenkaichi Junior Tournament was held at the Shinkiba 1stRING. Takuya Sugawara would defeat Kotaro Suzuki to win the tournament.  Ikuto Hidaka & Hayato “Jr” Fujita defended they NWA International Light Tag belts against Ryuichi Sekine & Ryota Nakatsu.
